The Fashionable History of The Met Gala

The Met Gala is one of the most significant fashion events in the world and has been hosted since the late 1940s. The annual fundraiser event is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and features the most famous celebrities repping their favorite fashion designer.
Today, the Met Gala differs from when the event was first created. Over the years, the Met Gala events have changed in fashion as a new fashion theme is introduced each year. Top-named celebrities such as Rihanna and Billie Elish wear some of the most expensive dresses in the world to impress people at the Met Gala. So if you want to learn more about the Met Gala's fashionable history, then be sure to check out this article.
Empress of Seventh Avenue
The Met Gala was first established in 1948 by Eleanor Lambert, a famous fashion publicist, who founded the Costume Institute. The Met Gala was one of many charitable institutions at the time in New York City, but what separated the Met Gala from the rest was the fashion that it promoted.

Lambert was known to be a leading figure in presenting American fashion to the rest of the world and even was given the nickname "Empress of Seventh Avenue." Lambert would go on to create the Council of Fashion Designers of America, which she founded in 1962.
A Merge Between Two Art Museums
The Met Gala was meant to be a fundraiser for the Costume Institution after it merged with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1946. But it wasn't until 1948, when Lambert joined the Costume Institution, that the Met Gala fundraiser and dinner were created.

Although the Met Gala is known today for its famous red carpet show, the fashion event is considered one of the world's largest fundraiser institutes as it has raised more than $200 million for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Every year seems to pull in more money as the Met Gala features the top designers in the world and is world famous.
First Met Gala Dinner
The first Met Gala was hosted in December of 1948 and was a dinner fundraiser that wasn't held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art until the 1970s. The Met Gala was held in several New York City locations, including Central Park, Waldorf-Astoria, and Rainbow Room.

Although the Met Gala was not held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the events still focused on the history of fashion and the new fashion trends that were popular at the time. The Met Gala was very different from the fashion show we think of today as the event wasn't centered around themes like today.
Popular New York Designers Attended The Met Gala
Several prominent figures and fashion designers, such as Jacques Fath, attended the annual Met Gala event as it featured the most fashionable clothing trends in the world. The Met Gala was much more of a fundraiser dinner back in the day and wasn't as popular as it is today.

In the early stages of the Met Gala, not many celebrities attended the event as it was more for designers and prominent figures in New York City. It wasn't until the 1970s that more celebrities started participating in the Met Gala as Diana Vreeland became the new head of the Met Gala events and changed things around.
Yves Saint Laurent
The Met Gala became the most popular fashion event in the world because it featured the top designers in the world who wanted to showcase their designs. Yves Saint Laurent is one prominent designer's work that has been featured for years at the Met Gala.

Saint Laurent was a French designer that founded his clothing brand in 1962. Lambert, at the time, knew that Saint Laurent needed to be featured at the Met Gala and he immediately began working with the Costume Institute until he died in 2008. The Met Gala has dedicated a few themes around Saint Laurent over the years.
Prada
Another prominent fashion house that has been featured at the Met Gala for years is Prada. Prada was founded in 1913 by Mario Prada, making it one of the oldest fashion companies that is still around. Prada was featured in the Met Gala's early days as one of the most popular fashion brands.

Prada has seen a lot of success since it was featured at the Met Gala, as the event is one of the best places to present its new styles. Prada is still one of the biggest brands at the Met Gala, with many celebrities repping the brand.
Diana Vreeland
Diana Vreeland, the former editor-in-chief for Vogue magazine, was hired as a consultant for the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1971 after Lambert's departure. Everything changed about the Met Gala as Vreeland had the vision to make the annual fundraiser one of the most significant fashion events in the world.

Once Vreeland took over, the Met Gala became grand and celebrity-oriented, which is the reason why the Met Gala is so famous today. Instead of the Met Gala being just a fundraiser dinner, Vreeland made the event more of a party and introduced fashion themes which made the event unique in every way.
Chanel
When it comes to fashion, Chanel has always been looked at as one of the pioneers of modern-day style. So it isn't a surprise that Chanel has been featured at the Met Gala over the years by several prominent celebrities. Just like Prada, Chanel has been around since the early 1900s and is still dominating the fashion market.

Chanel has received a lot of attention, not only because of its latest fashion trends but because it has been represented at the Met Gala for several years. This was another brand that Lambert knew needed to be a part of the Met Gala.
Schiaparelli
Elsa Schiaparelli was the founder of the famous fashion house Schiaparelli, which she created in 1927. Since then, Schiaparelli has always been considered some of the most unique high-fashion clothes on the market, and one of the reasons why Schiaparelli has always been featured at Met Gala events.

Fashion designers not only present their latest clothing at the Met Gala, but they also attend the Met Gala as it is the perfect place to meet other prominent fashion designers. Schiaparelli is still being worn by several celebrities each year at the Met Gala and offers some of the most unique styles.
Met Gala Becomes A Social Event
Once Vreeland became the consultant for the Met Gala, the fundraiser became a social event among celebrities. Several prominent celebrities attended the Met Gala in the 1970s such as Elizabeth Taylor, Elton John, Cher, Jackie Kennedy, Barbara Walters, and Diana Ross.

Vreeland changed the way the Met Gala was presented to the world and made every fashionable celebrity want to be a part of it. Now the Met Gala has become one of the main annual events for celebrities, especially ones that are very into fashion. Although the Met Gala was already a big event during the first 20 years, it became a world-famous event after Vreeland took over.
Introduction Of Themes
Diana Vreeland decided to introduce themes to each annual Met Gala event which is something that is still done today. The first time that the Met Gala was hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was in 1971, and this was the same year that themes were introduced to the event, with the first being "Fashion Plate."

Fashion Plate is defined as someone who dresses very fashionably, which is why Vreeland chose this as her first theme for the Met Gala. The Met Gala became something new once Vreeland added themes, and every celebrity wanted to be a part of it.
Romantic and Glamorous Hollywood Design
Once themes were introduced to the Met Gala, the Costume Institute decided to keep the tradition alive and introduced a new theme each year for the Met Gala. Celebrities from all over the world attended the Met Gala and dressed in designer clothing that represented the theme of the year.

In 1974, Cher attended the Met Gala, themed around "Romantic and Glamorous Hollywood Design," and sported the perfect dress that perfectly encapsulated the theme. Many people believe that Cher was the first to take the Met Gala theme seriously and cemented a tradition that celebrities still practice.
Ticket Prices Increased Over The Years
The ticket prices for the Met Gala only cost $50 back in 1948, but things have changed over the years for the annual event as tickets have increased dramatically. During the 1970s, tickets cost around $1,000, which was more realistic than the prices that you see today, as tickets can cost around $30,000.

Met Gala tickets didn't become overpriced until the mid-2000s, as celebrities started to pay thousands of dollars to attend the event. It seems that the Met Gala fundraiser charges more each year for tickets as the celebrities that are attending don't seem to mind.
Fashions of the Habsburg Era: Austria-Hungary
In 1979, Jackie Kennedy Onassis attended the Met Gala among many other celebrities such as Berry Berenson and Cher. The theme for the 1979 Met Gala was "Fashions of the Habsburg Era: Austria-Hungary." Jackie was always known for her style while she was the First Lady of the United States and was still quite fashionable after her role as First Lady.

Jackie's fashion style was so popular that it became a fashion trend during the 1960s. The Met Gala would go on to honor Jackie's style as the 2001 theme associated with the Met Gala was "Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years."
Alexander McQueen
Alexander McQueen is another high-profile fashion house that has been featured for several years at the Met Gala. Although Alexander McQueen was established in 1992, it was one of the biggest fashion brands and was even honored by the Costume Institute as they created the Alexander McQueen theme for the Met Gala.

Alexander McQueen has always made fashion trends from the past popular again and offers some pretty extraordinary dresses that other fashion brands won't create. Many celebrities, such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Beyonce, and Nicole Kidman, have repped Alexander McQueen. The fashion brand is prominent today, and many celebrities still wear their dresses.
Christian Dior
The fashion house Dior was founded by Christian Dior in 1946, which was the same year that the Costume Institution merged with the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Although Dior was a new fashion brand, it became one of the most popular during the 1950s and 1960s, as it was featured several times at the Met Gala during those years.

Now Dior is one of the largest fashion brands in the world, and that is thanks to the Met Gala. Several celebrities over the years have repped Dior, such as Bella Hadid, Princess Diana, and Charlize Theron.
Versace
Versace is another prominent fashion house that has gained recognition over the years, even though it was established in 1978 by Gianni Versace. Versace was another fine example of a new fashion brand being promoted by the Met Gala, as it has been featured at the fashion event every year since its start.

Several prolific celebrities such as Blake Lively, Emily Ratajkowski, and Gigi Hadid are always known to represent Versace as they always wear their dresses while attending the Met Gala. Although Versace would have become a world-famous fashion brand without the Met Gala, the fashion company still thanks the Met Gala for its promotion.
Each Theme Has Its Own Exhibit
After Diana Vreeland decided to incorporate themes into the Met Gala, she also decided that each theme should have its own exhibition inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art that is open to the public for a couple of months after the fashion event.

This was an extraordinary idea as it was the perfect way for the public to see what fashion brands were represented. The Met Gala has always been strict by not letting celebrities take pictures inside the event, so these exhibitions are the best way for the public to see what everyone was wearing during the party.
Anna Wintour Took Over In 1995
Anna Wintour took over as chairwoman in 1995, which was a couple of years after Diana Vreeland passed away. Wintour decided to make a couple of changes to the Met Gala dinner event as she changed the date from December to the first Monday in May.

Wintour thought that the change of time was just what the Met Gala needed as the winter months were too cold in New York City. Wintour also changed the way dinner was served as she implemented less eating for the guests and focused more on the fashion side of things.
An Important Fashion Figure
Anna Wintour has become one of the most important fashion figures and is known for having an eye for fashion, especially when it comes to the Met Gala. Before Wintour became the chairwoman of the Costume Institute, she worked for Vogue as Editor-in-Chief and still holds that position today.

Wintour has been given the nickname "Nuclear Wintour" as she is known to be a bit picky with things and tends to let her anger show. But Wintour has earned respect in the fashion industry as she has made fashion a lot more popular.
Limited Amount of Seats
Since the interior of the Metropolitan Museum of Art isn't that large, there are only a limited amount of seats for each Met Gala event. Wintour has been known to be pretty strict when it comes to the guest list for the Met Gala as she is not afraid to let someone know that they aren't welcome.

There are around 700 seats that are available to purchase but they are only exclusively reserved for prominent celebrities that are into fashion. If Wintour thinks that you are not fashionable enough to attend the Met Gala, she will revoke your tickets.
Museum Is Opened After The Dinner
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the largest museum located in America, and because of this, certain parts of the museum are open after the Met Gala dinner for celebrities and fashion designers to enjoy the exhibits. When Diana Vreeland became chairwoman of the Costume Institute she insisted that the Met Gala would be hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Since Vreeland's passing the Met Gala has always been hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to honor her name and what she did for the institution. Most of the museum is closed off during the Met Gala, but sections featuring the fashion theme for the year are open.
Extravagant Architecture
The Metropolitan Museum of Art has extravagant architecture that makes the museum one of the most unique in the world. When it comes to photographs of the Met Gala dinner, they are pretty hard to find, as one of the strictest rules of the Met Gala is there are no pictures allowed during the event.

Some celebrities were able to get away with taking pictures in the bathroom, but once the officials of the Met Gala found out, there haven't been any pictures from inside the Met Gala other than promotional photographs.
Princess Diana Attends Met Gala: Christian Dior
In 1996, Princess Diana made a grand appearance at the Met Gala in a Dior navy blue gown with a sapphire necklace. The Met Gala's theme that year was in honor of Christian Dior and Princess Diana was the center of attention as she was wearing a sexy Dior dress.

This was the only Met Gala that Princess Diana attended, but she did make a big impression as her dress was rated as one of the best during the 1990s Met Gala events. Princess Diana surprised everyone as she not only appeared at the Met Gala but she was wearing a lingerie dress that royals aren't usually seen in.
Rock Style
In 1999, the Costume Institute decided to go with a "Rock Style" theme which summed up the 90s rocker-grunge look. Celebrities such as Liv Tyler and Stella McCartney were quite excited to show off their homemade outfits which ended up being the highlight of the red carpet show as they stayed true to the theme.

While Tyler and McCartney truly embraced the "Rock Style" theme, other celebrities didn't really get the message as most of them wore ballgowns. The "Rock Style" theme was a great tribute to the rock and roll years that were long since gone.
Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years
In 2001, following the cancelation of the Met Gala in 2000, the Costume Institute decided to go with the "Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years" theme to honor the late First Lady during her time in office. Renée Zellweger was the one awarded with the best dress as she was wearing an Oleg Cassini dress which was the designer that worked with Jacqueline during her time as First Lady.

Several celebrities wore dresses that Jacqueline worse during the 1960s but Zellweger was the one that took things to another level. At this point, the Met Gala started becoming more expensive, and more celebrities were interested in attending.
Goddess: The Classical Mode
In 2003, Nicole Kidman stunned everyone by wearing a glamourous Tom Ford gown at the "Goddess: The Classical Mode" Met Gala theme. Almost every celebrity that was a woman was wearing white as white was the color for the night. Several fashion critics agreed that Kidman sported the best dress out of the many attendees.

Celebrities that attended the Met Gala tend to stick with the same designers over the years and Kidman has always looked good in Tom Ford gowns. Since the theme was "Goddess: The Classical Mode," several celebrities decided to go all out with their dresses.
Dangerous Liaisons: Fashion and Furniture in the 18th Century
Everything changed for the Met Gala in 2004 at the "Dangerous Liaisons: Fashion and Furniture in the 18th Century" themed event as the event became grander overnight. Amber Valletta was the reason that everything changed as she wore a Maggie Norris Couture corset and John Galliano skirt which was something never seen at the Met Gala.

Since the theme was centered around 18th-century fashion, several celebrities represented the way people used to dress back in the day. This Met Gala stood out among the rest as it marked the transformation of fashion, and because of this, the tickets for the event went up in price.
The House of Chanel
Jessica Simpson stood out among the rest of the ladies at "The House of Chanel" themed Met Gala in 2005. Simpson was accompanied by Michael Kors who ended up designing the dress that she wore to the event. The theme was centered around honoring the fashion house Chanel as it was responsible for creating some of the most trendy fashions.

Although the theme was all about Chanel, Simpson decided to rock a Michael Kors dress which ended up becoming one of the favorites of the night. Simpson wasn't the only one that shined that night though as several celebrities wore Chanel-inspired dresses.
AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion
In 2006, the theme that the Costume Institute decided to go with the "AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion" theme which represented British fashion over the years. One celebrity that decided to go with a classic British-styled dress was Lindsay Lohan.

Several other celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker sported a British punk-looking dress that was voted as one of the best dresses behind Lohan's. British designers from all over the United Kingdom were invited to show off their unique British look. This was just another theme that supported fashion from the past.
Poiret: King of Fashion
In 2007, the Met decided to honor Paul Poiret's legacy who was labeled the "King of Fashion" as he was one of the most prominent fashion figures. Cate Blanchett was given the title of the best dressed for the night as she was sporting a gold Balenciaga dress that encapsulated Poiret's fashion.

Since Paul Poiret represented fashion in the early 1900s, celebrities decided to go all out and wore some of the most extravagant dresses that were seen during the 1920s and 1930s. Obviously, Blanchett was the one that wore the best dress but many other ladies sported some pretty interesting dresses.
Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy
In 2008, the Met decided to take a different turn when it came to the event's theme as they decided on "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy" as the theme for the year. Many celebrities decided to team up with designers to make elegant-looking dresses that fit the superhero theme.

Jennifer Lopez was seen in a teal Alberta Ferretti gown that impressed everyone on the red carpet. This wasn't the first time that Lopez attended a Met Gala as she had previously attended two times before and impressed everyone just like she did in 2008.
The Model As Muse: Embodying Fashion
The "Model As Muse: Embodying Fashion" theme for the 2009 Met Gala was one of the most interesting themes over the years as the theme was centered around the designers doing whatever they wanted. One couple that stood out among the rest was Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen as Bündchen was wearing a sparkly blue Versace dress.

Bündchen's dress was given the title of the sexiest dress at the Met Gala that year. Celebrities such as Blake Lively sported similarly styled dresses. Designers enjoyed 2009's Met Gala as it allowed them to create anything they wanted.
Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty
The Met decided to do something special for Alexander McQueen the year after he passed away and centered the Met Gala's theme around his fashion over the years. The "Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty" was another exciting Met Gala that the designers and celebrities were pretty excited about.

Blake Lively decided to work with designer Karl Lagerfeld to create the amazing dress that she wore at the Met Gala. Lively attended the event with Lagerfeld at her side and impressed everyone with her immense beauty in the classic styled dress. Alexander McQueen would have been impressed with the dresses that were made in his honor.
Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations
Rihanna has always been one to dress to impress and that was no different at the 2012 Met Gala. The theme for that year was "Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations" which centered around Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada. This was an interesting theme as Schiaparelli's style was popular during the 1930s while Prada's style was popular during the 1990s.

Rihanna rocked a white Tom Ford dress that was very elegant looking. Rihanna is someone that loves the Met Gala and has attended several Met Gala events over the years. Fashion critics were quite impressed with her dress in 2012 which is something that she always strives for.
Punk: Chaos to Couture
Miley Cyrus went all out at the 2013 Met Gala as she sported a long-sleeved netted gown by Marc Jacobs. The "Punk: Chaos to Conture" theme centered around punk rock fashion over the years and Cyrus impressed everyone with her beautiful dress.

This Met Gala was unique as it required its guests to dress in a certain way and the museum even featured rare artifacts from the Vatican. This was one Met Gala not to forget as there were several celebrities wearing the most beautiful dresses.
Elaborate Performances
The Met Gala will sometimes surprise its guests with elaborate shows performed by celebrities such as Madonna. In 2018, Madonna performed in front of the Met Gala guests as she wanted to display the power of her finding religion in her life. This was something out of the ordinary as Met Gala events in the previous years only allowed a few performances, but Madonna was allowed to perform as she is close to Wintour.

It is uncertain if the next Met Gala will have a performance, but many celebrities and designers are hoping so as it makes the event more entertaining.
Camp: Notes on Fashion
In 2019, Lady Gaga was the one to take the spotlight for Met Gala's "Camp: Notes on Fashion" theme which was centered around Susan Sontag. Lady Gaga went above and beyond with her dress at the red carpet ceremony as she wore a hot pink Brandon Maxwell gown. Although Lady Gaga had one of the best dresses for the night, many celebrities wore dresses that were on par with hers.
Wintour Is Picky About The Guest List
When it comes to the guest list you better be on Anna Wintour's good side or you will not be allowed to attend the Met Gala. Wintour has the final say above everyone else that works at the Costume Institute and is quite picky when it comes to the guest list.

Surprisingly, high-profile celebrities have been rejected by Wintour to attend the Met Gala as she wants everyone that attends to be extremely into fashion. So if you are a celebrity that doesn't know the ins and outs of fashion, you probably won't be attending any Met Gala events in the future.
In America: A Lexicon of Fashion
In 2021, after the cancellation of the 2020 Met Gala due to the pandemic, celebrities and designers were ready to show their dresses and looks off. Met Gala Becomes More Grand Each Year
Over the years the Met Gala has become grander than it was in the following year. Celebrities and designers from all over the world are always hoping to attend the fashion event as it is not only a melting pot of celebrities but the best designers are there to represent their clothing.

Billie Elish recently started to attend the Met Gala and she made a grand entrance in 2021 with an amazing dress. With tickets being around $30,000, it seems like the Met Gala will remain the top fashion event in the world for some time.
After Parties
Met Gala after parties are thought of as the secretive second red carpet for the night and are usually held at Duke House, which is a large party mansion located in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. This second red carpet is just another way for designers and celebrities to show off their outfits for a night full of fun.

Not everyone is invited to Met Gala after parties as the guest list isn't that large and you must be invited to attend. Most of the younger celebrities look forward to the night out as there are tons of celebrities that attend the after parties.
Met Gala's New Theme For This Year
The next Met Gala will be held on May 1st and all the celebrities and designers are ready for it as the Met just recently announced their new theme, which is "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty." The theme will be centered around the famous German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld who was known to be one of the top designers at Chanel.

It is uncertain who exactly is on the guest list but the details are probably not that surprising as the celebrities who attend have been attending for years. We will see what designers have in mind for this year.
